Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge

Kath had never seen this bridge before so we decided to take her to it and make her cross it.


We've all heard the storeys of the bridge being three pieces of rope strung across the cliff with another rope linking the others in a V shape. The local fishermen used to monkey climb their way across no matter what the weather.

We'll the National Trust has changed that.

It is now safe for all to cross. It still sways in the wind and apparently only 8 people can cross it at once. I must point out it doesn't say how heavy these 8 can be.

I say this cause we passed a very very very large family of four on our walk to the bridge and they would've weighed at least 10 people combined.

This is the hut purchased just below the bridge on the cliffs edge. The fishermen would shelter here on stormy days or when they were cleaning the fish.

Even carrying the materials here and building the thing would've been dangerous as it is very steep. Not to mention that Ireland is not named the emerald island for nothing (slight hint here - it rains a lot!)

Just so you aren't under any illusions, here are a few perspective shots. It still would be slippy getting up and down from the bridge on the steep path in the rain. Thankfully, it was nice weather when we went.

Full of enthusiasm (and the fear that the fat family would be allowed on with us, thus endangering the weight limit of the bridge) we trundled across the bridge. Jim even jumped up and down to make it wobble. Heee heee.

We each posed so we could say 'Been there, done that, got the photo'.


We also took lots of scenic photos.
